Combat is an integral part of Lineage II. It is the primary way your character progresses in the game. In some combat, your character fights various kinds of monsters. Monsters can be found outside of towns, in hunting fields and dungeons. When you choose something, such as a monster, for your character to attack, that becomes your character's target. When you move your mouse over a target, the mouse cursor changes to the shape of a sword. Click the target once to move your character into range and to attack.
When you move your mouse over a monster, the monster’s status window appears, displaying its health points and ability attributes. Some monsters are passive and will not attack your character unless you attack them, while other monsters will attack your character if you get too close to them.
The color of a monster’s name in its target window shows its strength and how difficult it will be for your character to fight it. The colors (and their difficulty levels) are:
When your character is attacked, your character's health points (HP) decrease. Your character’s Defense rating determines how well your character resists damage from attacks. The higher your character's rating, the less damage your character receives. Your character can also consume healing potions to restore health while fighting, and if you’re playing a mystic you may be able to cast a Heal spell.
To prevail in battle, you will need to use your skills. From the Skill window (Alt+K), drag skills to your shortcut bar (F1–F12) for easier access to them. Using skills will decrease your character's mana points (MP), so be sure to rest every now and then, between fights, to recover MP.
When your character defeats a monster, you gain XP and SP that will help you gain new levels.
Combat can also be done between players. This is called PvP (player versus player) combat. Lineage II is strongly oriented around PvP, and it is encouraged but not required. Game systems prevent another character from “griefing” you (repeatedly killing your character without your consent to PvP). To attack another character, hold down the Ctrl button and right-click on the character.
If your character dies in battle, you will be given the option to resurrect in the nearest village. Alternatively, you can wait for another player to revive your character with a resurrection scroll or spell. Resurrecting in the village will cost you a small XP penalty, which increases as your character increases in level. The use of resurrection spells and items also has varying XP penalties.
A character must use skills to do well in battle and to gain XP efficiently. When you start out, your character has few skills but will gain more as you level up.
You can check the skills you have by opening the Skill window (ALT+K). Skills can be Active or Passive. Passive skills affect your character at all times. Active skills can be used at your command. At the Learn Skill tab, you can see a list of skills your character will learn in the future. When you reach a level where you can learn new skills, an open book icon will appear on your screen. Click the icon to go to the Learn Skill tab of the Skill window. Click on available skills to learn them. Learning a skill consumes Skill Points (SP). Some skills require additional items as well as SP before you can learn them.
There are different kinds of skills. The type your character gets depends on your character’s class and level. Some skill types are:
You will gain more skills and level up existing skills as your character gains levels. Higher-level skills require more MP; your character gains more MP as you level up. Later in the game, your character will be able to improve skills by enchanting them.
Buffs are spells cast on your character to help your character fighter better and longer. Your character can receive buffs from different skills or items, or from other players and NPCs (Non-Playable Characters). Always fight with buffs, in order to maximize your character's XP efficiency.
Some item buffs come in the form of Herbs. Monsters in any area that is not a dungeon will sometimes drop Herbs that can provide temporary buffs that last up to five minutes. These look like vases and urns of different colors, on the ground. To receive buffs from an NPC, visit a Newbie Guide in any town and ask to receive supplemental magic buffs.
Many Lineage II items have different levels, known as grades, that relate to your character's level. As you level up, your item grade classification changes.
Characters must use equipment suitable for their level. If your character tries to use a weapon or armor item that is higher than your character's grade, your character will suffer various penalties to movement speed or attack. If your character uses items that are lower than your character's grade, your character will not gain the advantages that you need.
To equip an item such as a weapon, a piece of armor, or an accessory, open your inventory (Tab or ALT+V) and double-click the equipment you want your character to wear. To unequip an item, drag it from your character preview window back to the inventory, or right-click it.
You can improve the stats on weapons and armor by using enchant scrolls on them, such as Scroll: Enchant Weapon or Scroll: Enchant Armor. These scrolls are grade-specific.
Adena is the currency of Lineage II. When your character kills a monster, items and Adena fall to the ground and the cursor turns into a hand-shaped icon to show that you can pick them up. Your character can also receive Adena as rewards for completing quests. You can use your inventory window to view the items and Adena your character has.
Soulshots and Spiritshots are items that allow you to boost your character's attack power and magic power instantly. Soulshots increase physical attack power and are suited to fighter characters. Spiritshots and Blessed Spiritshots increase magical attack power and are suited to mystic characters who cast spells.
With each hit of your character's weapon or spell, shots are consumed. You can set up shots to be automatically applied to every hit by dragging the Soulshot or Spiritshot icon from your inventory to the shortcut bar and right-clicking the icon. When you see a reflective animation on the icon, you know that the automatic usage mode is applied.
There are different shots for different item grades. A weapon can only use shots for its grade. You may purchase shots from a vendor NPC or obtain them through crafting.
Your character can receive experience points (XP) and skill points (SP) by completing quests and defeating monsters. The XP bar is shown at the bottom of your screen. The bar fills from left to right as your character gains XP. Once the XP bar is full, your character levels up. Skill points are used to acquire new skills as your character gains levels.
Vitality is a system that allows your character to obtain benefits when hunting monsters, such as XP, SP, and improved item rewards as drops. Pets and servitors are also affected by Vitality’s benefits. If your character has no Vitality, you may suffer from less XP and SP gain, and fewer item drops.
You can see your Vitality level as a green bar beneath the health and mana bars in your status window. Vitality is consumed as your character gains XP; this gradual weakening of your character over long periods of game time is designed to encourage you to take real life breaks from the immersive Lineage II game world. Vitality consumption slows if your character gains XP while in a party of the same level range.
Each of your characters, and each class mode of each character (main class, Dual Class, and Subclass) have their own individual Vitality pool. Vitality is refilled once per week, at 6:30am (server time) on Wednesday. (This coincides with the regular scheduled server maintenance, but the refill is not dependent on the maintenance.)

NPCs (Non-Playable Characters) are controlled by the game instead of by other Lineage II players. NPCs are primarily involved in giving quests, buying and selling items, and giving advice to players.
Newbie Guides and Adventurers’ Guides – Provide beginning characters (up to level 76) with various buffs.
Gatekeepers – Allow your character to teleport to a town or major location. Teleports are free for characters of up to level 40.
Dimensional Merchants – Offer a variety of rare items in exchange for other items, transfer Dimensional items between characters on the same server and same account, and deliver items from the web store to characters.
Warehouse Managers – Give access to warehouses. A warehouse is like having a second inventory where you can store items your character doesn’t need to use all the time.
Vendors – Grocers, blacksmiths, weapon and armor merchants, accessory merchants, and other vendors can be found in towns and villages. Vendors sell a selection of items, depending on their title. They also buy items from players.
Quests are interactive stories that reward your character for completing certain tasks. Quests are generally received by speaking to NPCs. NPCs with red or blue scroll icons over their heads have quests your character is eligible to receive. A red quest scroll signifies a one-time quest. A blue quest scroll signifies a repeatable quest. To receive a quest, talk to an NPC and click Quest, then progress through the dialogue to accept the quest. The NPC will tell you what needs to be done and may offer some direction on how to complete the task.
You can also view quest details in the Quest window (ALT+U). Depending on the quest and your character's task, a quest pin may appear in the map or radar and tell you where to go as a next step. Move to the quest pin and fulfill the task at hand. Some quests that ask your character to collect multiple items or kill multiple monsters have a Notification function. Click Notification in the Quest window to open a small interface window that helps you keep track of your character's progress.
Depending on the quest, you may receive quest items, often as proof of killing monsters your character has been tasked to hunt. Quest items are not dropped on the ground like other loot: you receive them automatically. You will hear a sound effect when you receive one. These items can be view in the Quest tab of your inventory. In most cases, once your character has finished a quest, you return to the NPC who gave your character the quest, to collect your reward.

Your character can take on more difficult monsters and zones and get more XP by joining other characters in groups called parties. The many character classes in Lineage II provide very different roles. Joining a party with other characters who can provide skills that your character does not have helps you to hunt more efficiently. For example, if your character is a tank, joining up with a healer or a mage will be advantageous. While in a party, the group obtains more XP than when each character hunts alone. The greater the number of party members, the higher the XP bonus. To invite someone to a party, type /invite and the character’s name then hit Enter.
A clan is a collection of Lineage II players who agree to help each other out on a regular basis. Clan members can chat through their own clan interface window, can organize raids and initiate clan wars, and much more. Any character of level 10 or higher may create a clan by speaking to the NPC in each village who oversees clan-related services: High Priests, Grand Masters, High Generals, and others.
